Your NHS eye test entitlement

If you are entitled to a free eye test provided by the NHS, you will receive an Essential eye test Optical Express worth £50. In some cases, patients may even be eligible for a contribution towards your glasses.

Who is entitled to a free eye test? The categories below state who is entitled to a free eye test by the NHS:

  • Up to 16 years of age
  • Up to 18 years of age and in full-time education
  • Live in Scotland
  • Over 60 years of age
  • Aged 40 or over who are sibling or child of a diagnosed glaucoma patient
  • People who need certain complex lenses
  • People diagnosed diabetic or glaucoma
  • A person (or the partner) of who receive certain benefits
  • Holders (or the partner of) an HC2 exemption certificate

Patients who are entitled to an NHS funded sight test will have the option to upgrade from an Essential Eye Test to an Advanced Eye Test. The fee for those patients who wish to upgrade to an Advanced Eye Test is £25.00.
