Exploring the Connection Between Liver Health and Eye Health

As we enter the new year, January serves as an important reminder to prioritise our health, especially during Liver Awareness Month. While we often associate liver health with processes like detoxification, metabolism, and digestion, it's also deeply interconnected with our eye health. The relationship between the liver and eyes is complex, with each influencing the function of the other. A healthy liver can support healthy eyes.

This month, as we focus on the importance of maintaining a healthy liver, it’s also essential to recognise how liver function can impact eye health - and vice versa. Understanding the connection between these two organs can help with early detection and prevention of serious conditions.

Below, we explore the key connections between the liver and your eyes:

Blood Flow

The liver plays a crucial role in regulating blood flow throughout the body, including to the eyes. When you move your eyes, the liver works to increase blood flow to the retina and other vital structures. If the liver is damaged, or not functioning properly, it can affect blood circulation, potentially leading to vision problems.

Metabolism

The liver is vital for the metabolism of amino acids, proteins, and minerals - all of which are essential ingredients for eye health. Additionally, the liver produces complement proteins that are important for the immune system, helping protect the eyes from infections. The retina, in particular, contains taurine, an amino acid involved in visual function. If taurine levels are low due to liver dysfunction, it can lead to retinal degeneration, affecting vision.

Immunity

A healthy liver supports the immune system by producing complement proteins, which play a role in defending the body from infections. Since the eyes are vulnerable to various infections and diseases, the liver's role in immunity is critical for maintaining eye health. When liver function is impaired, it can weaken the immune system, making the eyes more susceptible to issues like inflammation and infection.

This January, during Liver Awareness Month, let's not only focus on liver health but also recognise the connection between our liver and our eyes. By understanding how one organ affects the other, we can take proactive steps to maintain both our liver and eye health for the long term. The healthier your liver, the healthier your eyes - and the clearer your vision of the future.
